On Thursday, in front of the beautiful backdrop of the lake at Oak Mountain State Park, the Alabama State Parks Foundation was introduced. Their goal is to raise money for all 21 parks in the state to enhance programming, facilities and park experiences.

Dan Hendricks, retired president of the University of North Alabama Foundation, and president of the ASPF Board of Directors, said in his opening remarks that in addition to just announcing the foundation, they are also launching a great park movement for the citizens of Alabama.

“We are going to try to accomplish three things,” Hendricks said. “First, to highlight the value of the parks. Secondly, to encourage our citizens to visit parks. And third, to invite the citizens of Alabama to join us and the parks administration in supporting and enhancing this wonderful legacy we all enjoy. Only a few minutes in the parks will improve our outlook and well-being. We leave the stresses of modern life and relax and pause.”

Alabama State Parks honored eight Eagle Award winners Saturday, February 3, during a ceremony at Lake Guntersville State Park.

Now in its eight year, the Eagle Awards - sponsored by The Alabama State Parks Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCRN) - Honor people and organizations who have made outstanding contributions in support of Alabama State Parks. For 2024, eight winners were selected from submitted nominations.

Dan Hendricks (Parks Partner): in 2018, Hendricks helped create and launch the Alabama State Parks Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to fundraising and other support of the State Parks System. He became the organization's first president and served through January 2024. A Florence resident he remains a member of the ASPF Board of Directors.
